Defining Your Style? - Read This First!

Are you unsure of what your decorating style is? Do you keep changing your mind about what look you want to achieve in your home? If so, don't worry-you're not alone! Defining your decorating style can be tricky! We're here to spill the beans on it all, sure we'll give you some tips for figuring out your style but we're also about to share a dirty little secret. So read on and find your style, if you want, either way we hope to inspire you a little!

Trying to define your personal decorating style can seem like a daunting task, especially if you've never really thought about it before. Do a query on the internet and you’ll find hundreds of blog posts about various design and decorating styles. We’re here to tell you to forget them all! We don’t think you have to fit into a perfect little box, sure the projects we are drawn to tend to have a more of a traditional influence, but you’ll also find us incorporating some modern features into those designs. We also love bringing a more casual feel to the spaces we design. Let’s face it, nowadays there is a more relaxed feel when it comes to designing spaces. You can thank our busy lifestyles for that… Oh! And Joanna Gaines and the insurgence of her modern farmhouse!
At Boulevard Home, we think it’s more important to define certain attributes versus an exact design style. With a little reflection, you can begin to pinpoint the elements that appeal to you and start to develop your own unique sense of style. A good place to start is by looking at your wardrobe preferences. Do you tend to gravitate towards traditional or modern looks? Do you prefer a more casual aesthetic (think jeans & t-shirt), or do you like things to feel a bit more formal (little black dress/business suit)? Once you have a general sense of the direction you want to go in, you can start to narrow down your choices even further.

If you have a good idea of the overall look you are going for, you can start to build a palette that reflects your taste. For example, are you drawn to earthy tones and organic shapes? Then perhaps a more traditional or rustic interior might be the right fit for you. On the other hand, if you prefer clean lines and stark contrast, then a more modern or contemporary style might be more your speed. By taking the time to really think about what you like, and don't like, you can start to create a space that feels like it was designed just for you.
There is an abundance of interior inspiration out there, whether you’re flipping pages in a magazine, perusing Pinterest or scrolling on Instagram you can easily find images that can help narrow down your personal decorating style, but be careful, don’t scroll and double tap mindlessly. We recommend making notes of what exactly you like and dislike in a space. Really consider every detail, from the colours, to the way the space is laid out, what you think of the materials used and how much accessorizing is done. This will help you narrow down what is really important to you as you define you style.

We hope that this post has given you a few good starting points for defining your own style. But remember, it’s always best to explore and experiment until you find what works best for you. And if all of that seems like too much work (or just plain overwhelming), don’t worry – we’re here to help! Book a one-on-one design session with one of our professionals and we'll work with you to develop a style that is truly your own.
